Rhinoplasty Surgical Procedure

Rhinoplasty is a common surgical procedure used to reshape the nose for either appearance or to improve the function of the nose. Rhinoplasty is commonly known as a nose job or nose reshaping. Although it is often used for appearance purposes, this procedure is also often used to correct birth defects, improve breathing problems or to correct problems after a trauma to the nose.

Those considering the procedure for appearance purposes may be unhappy with the size, shape, symmetry or contours of the nose, which they hope will be improved by the surgery. For those considering the procedure for medical purposes, they may be hoping for an improvement in breathing or to reshape the nose after an injury. No matter what your personal reasons are for considering rhinoplasty, consider these important points when making your surgery decision:

  • Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure and thus involves the inherent risks when undergoing anesthesia.

  • A consultation with a surgeon or ENT specialist is required. During the consultation, you can ask any questions, find out more about the procedure and find out if you are a good candidate. During your initial exam, the physician should find out about your physical and mental well being to determine if the rhinoplasty procedure will give you your desired outcome.

  • Understand the complications that can arise from the procedure. Although considered to be a very safe procedure, rhinoplasty is major surgery with a recuperation period. It is important to understand that there can be complications such as scarring, nerve damage, and infection. Your health professional can review the list of potential complications with you in detail.
The Procedure and Recovery

No two rhinoplasty procedures are the same because every individual has a unique nose structure. Generally, rhinoplasty can be completed on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia or with a local anesthesia and sedative. Your surgeon will choose from a variety of techniques and procedures depending on your specific needs.

It is important to understand the recovery process. Right after surgery, you can expect considerable swelling, discomfort and some facial bruising. During the first week post surgery, your surgeon will recommend that you get plenty of rest and minimal activity. Healing is gradual and it is important to follow the surgeon's instructions precisely.

At Montgomery ENT Center, we have experienced surgeons who have performed hundreds of successful rhinoplasty procedures. A successful rhinoplasty procedure requires an excellent relationship between the patient and the surgeon. The surgeon will provide realistic expectations and give you his or her medical opinion as to what you can expect after the healing process is complete. We invite you to make an appointment for a consultation at Montgomery ENT to see if rhinoplasty is right for you.
