Eyelid Surgery Results
As we age, often our eyelids become puffy or baggy, giving us a haggard or worn appearance. This natural aging process can cause heavily wrinkled eye skin and heavy baggy eyes. For many people, eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty is an ideal solution to restore a more youthful look and appearance for the eyes.
The eyes have a tremendous impact on your appearance. Because of how much they are used in your daily expression, they often will be the first place you see the signs of aging. The eyes are so susceptible to aging because the skin around your eyes is far thinner than the rest of your face. Along with the thinner skin, you have fewer oil glands in the eye area meaning those factors along with genetic factors, sun damage, fatigue, and stress can age your eyes sooner than the rest of your body.
What Results Can I Expect From Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery can make a dramatic difference in the way you look. The procedure can remove bags, pouches and excess skin from under and over the eyes.
It is important to understand that this procedure will not help if you have a dropped position of the eyebrow or the wrinkles between the eyebrows. Other procedures can help these conditions. Eyelid surgery involves removing the fat, muscle and skin from your upper or lower lids, or both.
During the procedure, your surgeon will make incisions along your natural skin lines and creases. Then, the skin will be separated from underlying muscle and fatty tissue. Once the skin, muscle, and fatty tissue are separated, the excess skin and fat is removed and the incisions are closed. These incisions are closed with very fine sutures (to minimize scarring) and they will require removal in three to five days.
Generally, only the surgical area is anesthetized and you likely will not require general anesthesia.
Following eyelid surgery, most patients need two to three weeks of recovery time. After this amount of time and once your surgeon has given you approval, you should be able to resume your normal activities. Most patients report only mild pain that is typically alleviated with over the counter drugs. Your surgeon will outline all your pain management options. Most patients experience some bruising and swelling, but it should dissipate after four to seven days. Your surgeon will also likely recommend that you sleep in a semi inclined position, which will help reduce the collection of fluid around your eyes and will help to reduce swelling.
