Ear Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT) Selection

Did you know that ear, nose and throat complaints are the number one reason people in the United States go to see their doctor?  Many may visit an Ear Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT).   By definition, an ear nose and throat Doctor specializes in disorders of the ear or nose or throat.  Many times, people will visit an ear nose and throat Doctor after a referral from their family physician.  ENT Doctors have had special training regarding conditions of the ear, nose and throat.

Below are some frequently asked questions we receive regarding our Ear Nose and Throat Doctors on staff.

  • What do ENT doctors treat?  The technical term for this branch of medicine is called otolaryngology.  This word is derived from the words oto (ear), rhino (nose) and laryngo (throat).  An ear nose and throat doctor is literally someone who studies and treats the ear, nose and throat.  Typically, ENT doctors have their training in medicine and surgery so they will treat patients and perform surgeries if required.
  • What type of training do ear nose and throat doctors have?  To become an ENT physician, one must undergo a four year undergraduate degree, four years of medical school, one year surgical internship and four years of ENT residency.  Once the residency is completed, some doctors choose to complete a fellowship, which is a one or two year specialized period of training in areas like rhinology, otology, laryngology or plastic surgery.
  • When should I see an ENT doctor?  Most patients see an ENT doctor after a referral from a primary care physician.  There are many reasons someone might need an ear nose and throat doctor, including:
    • A child having chronic ear or throat infections
    • People suffering from sleep apnea
    • Chronic, recurring sinus issues
    • Persistent swollen glands in the neck or throat
    • Chronic upper respiratory infections
    • Anyone experiencing hearing loss
